Turkeys, turkeys, turkeys!

Thanksgiving is only 16 days away!

Have you placed your turkey order yet?  If not, RMC is offering the following turkey products for your holiday meal(s):

  • Amish Pride whole turkeys: These turkeys are labeled “natural,” which means that by law, they must be minimally processed and contain no artificial ingredients, coloring, or preservatives. What’s more, these birds, having been raised by Amish, have never watched television. $1.79/lb.
  • Bell & Evans whole turkeys: These turkeys are labeled “natural.” They’ve been minimally processed and contain no artificial ingredients, coloring, or preservatives. “While some natural turkeys are bland and dry, others could be the prototype for a Rockwellian Thanksgiving. Bell & Evans birds — plump, moist, beautifully bronzed, and with a terrific turkey flavor — are standouts.” (www.realsimple.com) This is a chance for these turkeys to crow and strut. Their celebrated barnyard neighbors, the Bell & Evans chickens, usually get all the show. $2.99/lb.
  • EBERLY’S organic turkeys: These are the Rolls-Royce of our turkeys. They’re labeled “organic,” a step above “natural.”  Turkeys bearing the organic label are raised free of antibiotics and growth hormones, are given access to the outdoors (also qualifying them as free-range), and are fed organic feed, which by law contains no genetically modified grains, pesticides or herbicides, or animal by-products.” (www.realsimple.com). They say that Eberly’s birds have “a pronounced turkey flavor.” Now fancy that. $5.19/lb.

To place a holiday meat order, please do one of the following:

  1. Complete the Holiday Order Form and drop it off or email it to rmc@chorus.net
  2. Stop into the co-op and place your order with one of our meatheads
  3. Call the co-op at 233.4329 and ask for the meatheads to place a special order.

Wondering how big a bird you need?

  • If you want enough turkey for the Thanksgiving dinner alone, buy ¾ to 1 pound per person.
  • If you like those cold turkey leftovers, buy 1 ½ pounds (or slightly more) per person.
  • If you need a large turkey, consider buying two 10- to 12-pound birds and roasting them side by side. Small turkeys cook (and defrost) much quicker than very large ones, and they tend to stay moister.
