West High Students Line Up for Teen
Tattoo’s Valentine Special

Madison — The RMC Board knew that their new concession Teen Tattoo would be popular with West High students, but they were unprepared for the
excitement. When news got around of Teen Tattoo’s grand opening, the lines stretched to the corner.

For the grand opening, Teen Tattoo is offering a Valentine’s Special. What surprised the staff is that it is overwhelmingly boys, not girls, who are storming the doors. The special is a tattoo of a small heart with the word MOM written across it. Most boys have chosen a red heart with purple lettering.

One mother said, “When I heard what I was getting as a Valentine’s gift from Jacob this year, I was really touched!”

“But I don’t know where it is on him. When I asked to see it, he
told me I never would.”

“The special is what I call a ‘tattoodle,’” says Trixie, the RMC’s
body art specialist. “It’s just a way to get them started.”

Cooking from the Shelves of the Little Store

This recipe was contributed by Regent Neighborhood resident Julie
DeWitt
. She has lived in the neighborhood since August, 1982. Her
family moved to their house on Chamberlain just before their second
daughter was born. The recipe she’s submitted comes from a colleague
at Hamilton Middle School, where she worked as a learning coordinator
until she retired in 2005. The colleague brought the recipe to school
one day and everyone loved it and asked for the recipe. Julie likes to
make the cake in the fall with Wisconsin apples and cranberries.

Cranberry-Apple-Walnut Cake

  • One 9×13 inch cake
  • 350 degree oven (45-50 minutes to bake)
  • 1 3/4 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups sliced and peeled apples
  • 1/2 cup walnut pieces
  • 1/2 pound fresh, whole raw cranberries (about 2 cups)

Cream together oil and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, and beat well.
Sift together the flour and dry ingredients. Add to the first mixture
and stir until thoroughly combined. Stir in apples, walnuts and
cranberries. Bake in a well-greased 9×13 pan, 45-50 minutes at
350 degrees. You can also use a bundt pan and baked it about 10
minutes longer.

Food Donations for a Good Cause

Food Insecurity and Food Hardship are new terms in our vocabulary,
but they are not new realities for many Americans. Survey research
done by Gallup for the Food Research and Action Center shows that in
the fourth quarter of 2009, 18.5% of Americans experienced food
hardship — that is, sometimes not having enough money to buy the food
they needed.

The food hardship rate is even worse for households with
children. Twenty-four point one percent of households with children
reported food hardship in 2009.

Shocking statistics like these have moved the RMC to adopt the
Domestic Abuse Shelter in our neighborhood as the recipient of the
food gifts you generously leave in the store entrance. Women and
children both are sheltered there. Last summer, the RMC Gardeners
brought them fresh produce. If you would like to get involved, contact
RMC e-news.
